Environmental Health and Safety Specialist
Job Summary:
The Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist will lead various assignments and projects in support of plant safety and environmental goals. This role will work with various programs and policies, research a variety of EHS related components, participate in and lead various programs to assist in achieving our vision of Zero Harm.
Duties/Responsibilities:
1. Engage the work force, both salary and hourly, to drive cultural change and accomplish safety performance objectives and targets.
2. Ensure compliance with all federal, state and local regulatory requirements for safety.
3. Review planned changes and new equipment installations. Approve or recommend changes in manufacturing and engineering matters of plant layout, location/relocation of machinery, equipment, facilities, safety designs and processes.
4. Maintain and improve the environmental management system. Collect environmental and safety data for use in determining root-causes of compliance problems and pollution prevention opportunities. Implement proactive corrective steps.
5. Complete and submit applicable environmental reports in a timely fashion (such as Tier II, TRI Form R, Generator’s Residual Waste, Waste-Water Self-Monitoring, and Air Emissions Inventory).
6. Participate in the administration, implementation and compliance with the ISO14001 Environmental Management System.
7. Oversee hazardous and non-hazardous waste program including ensuring the correct handling, packaging, labeling, storage and transportation of waste to approved treatment and/or disposal facilities.
8. Coordinate air emission, wastewater, storm water and waste auditing and testing.
9. Present safety and environmental training programs to workers and supervisors. Some standardized materials will be made available, and the development of site-specific training materials will be required.
10. Utilize knowledge of health and safety engineering processes and practices to identify and mitigate hazards and risks.
11. Conduct research to apply the best industrial and working practices.
12. Identify and evaluate unsafe practices to address root cause in the mitigation of hazard and risk.
13. Leverage technology and forward thinking while leading safety improvement projects.
14. Develop, measure and audit the effectiveness of EHS hazard control programs.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- University degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 2 Years minimum experience within a manufacturing environment
- Experience with high hazard controls in a manufacturing environment.
- Experience work with tools such as safety management data systems, MS office, and smart sheet
- Proven experience developing and driving a safety culture and transformation.
- Experience with Environmental permitting, recordkeeping and compliance.
- Strong background in OSHA standards, compliance reporting requirements and other applicable regulatory requirements.
- Experience as a Safety subject matter expert in one or more of the following: cranes and rigging, electrical/Arc Flash, fall protection and/or welding
- Collaborative thinker and strong decision maker with the demonstrated ability to influence and engage cross-functional teams.
Preferred Experience:
- Associate Safety Professional (ASP) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification.
- Working knowledge and experience with SafeStart, STOP or other behavior-based safety program.
- Knowledge of and skills in Lean Manufacturing and Safety Kaizens.
