Environmental Health Specialist Supervisor
Overview
Join our team as an Environmental Health Specialist Supervisor, where you will lead efforts to protect public health and the environment through comprehensive oversight of environmental health programs. . You will utilize your expertise in environmental science, data analysis, and technical writing to develop innovative solutions that promote sustainable practices and safeguard community well-being. Your leadership will drive impactful initiatives related to water treatment, wastewater management, waste disposal, and environmental law enforcement.
Duties
Supervises and directs assigned personnel including planning and delegating work assignments, interviewing candidates, making hiring recommendations, training and developing, establishing goals, evaluating performance, recommending actions, maintaining discipline, and communicating developments.
Directs Environmental Health Division programs.
Investigates public complaints, including, but not limited to, unsanitary housing, public and semi-public pools, vector control, water, sewage, and other environmental issues.
Reviews plans and applications for public and semi-public pools, wells, and proposed sewage system construction or repair, including performing soil borings for repairs, and conducting frequent on-site inspections to ensure compliance with state and local regulations.
Maintains records of inspection data, prepares and submits reports and summaries of field inspections for regulatory and administrative action. Reviews and writes ordinances.
Collects samples, such as air, vector, drinking, and surface water for laboratory analysis.
Participates in emergency preparedness activities such as drills, and mass prophylaxis clinic, and provides education regarding man-made and natural disasters.
Assists co-workers with activities, complaints, and investigations of public health importance.
Maintains position on animal control, and Local Emergency Planning Committee boards.
Participates in educational and training opportunities related to State and local laws, codes, and ordinances.
Provides testimony in legal proceedings and court.
Occasionally responds to emergencies from off-duty status on 24-hour basis. Performs duties of co-workers in their absence.
Performs related duties as assigned.
I.
Baccalaureate Degree in Environmental Science, Natural Resources, or other science related field.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, ServSafe, Pool and Spa, Vector, and Indiana Onsite Waste Water Professionals Association certifications.
Ability to meet all hiring requirements including passage of a drug test.
Practical knowledge of the standard principles and practices of environmental health.
Working knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations pertaining to all phases of environmental health.
Knowledge of the responsibilities of other agencies relating to environmental health and community resources.
Ability to apply environmental health knowledge and techniques in the investigation of environmental health issues.
Ability to conduct standard chemical tests and use basic water testing kits.
Ability to supervise and direct assigned personnel including planning and delegating work assignments, interviewing candidates, making hiring recommendations, training and developing, establishing goals, evaluating performance, recommending actions, maintaining discipline, and communicating developments.
Ability to plan, schedule, and conduct field inspections, maintain accurate records, and prepare factual reports.
Ability to apply knowledge of people, and locations, plan and layout assigned work projects, and read and interpret detailed prints, specifications, and maps.
Ability to properly operate standard office equipment, including computer, calculator, copy machine, fax machine, telephone, and laser.
Ability to safely operate, protect, and maintain a variety of hand and/or power tools, such as push probe, laser tape measure, level, compass, OPS, and thermometer.
Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of Department information and records according to state requirements.
Shall comply with all employer and Department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, Indiana State Department of Health (IDOH), Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), building departments, contractors, engineers, soil scientists, animal control, law enforcement, and public in a courteous and tactful manner, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.
Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment on several tasks at the same time, often under time pressure.
Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written or oral instructions and present findings in oral or written form.
Ability to testify in legal proceedings and court.
Ability to occasionally work extended, evening, and/or weekend hours and travel out of town, sometimes overnight, for meetings and training conferences.
Ability to respond to emergencies on 24-hour basis, and serve on call on rotation basis. Possession of a valid driver's license and a demonstrated safe driving record.
Pay: $60,416.00 per year
